Freeze-dried matsutake is extremely delicate and highly sensitive to moisture and physical pressure. The client needed a robust secondary packaging solution that could house multiple individual sachets while providing a “heavier,” more luxurious feel than standard cardboard. Our design team focused on a structural “suitcase” style tin that combines traditional cultural aesthetics with modern functionality.

Packaging Solution

• Material: 0.25mm extra-thick food-grade tinplate for enhanced structural integrity and a premium weight.
• Structure: Rectangular suitcase-style tin featuring a reinforced metal handle and secure side-clasp locks to prevent accidental opening.
• Printing: Elegant cream-white base with deep burgundy accents. The design incorporates traditional ink-wash style mushroom illustrations and gold foil typography for a high-end look.
• Functionality: Equipped with a foldable metal handle for easy carrying, eliminating the need for an additional paper bag and promoting sustainability.
• Internal Protection: Designed to accommodate custom foam or PET inserts to perfectly organize and protect the freeze-dried sachets (60g total weight).

Results & Feedback

The “Handled Suitcase” design significantly boosted the product’s appeal in the premium gift market, particularly for corporate gifting and health-conscious consumers. The reuse value of the tin — often repurposed as a household storage box — ensures long-term brand exposure. Feedback highlighted that the airtight nature of the tinplate provided an extra layer of confidence in maintaining the matsutake’s intense aroma.
