How to prepare print-ready artwork for custom tin boxes — dielines, CMYK vs Pantone, resolution, bleed and file formats for flawless tin printing.
Great custom tin packaging starts with print-ready artwork. Getting your files right the first time avoids delays, color surprises and reprints. This guide explains how to prepare print-ready artwork for custom tin boxes — dielines, color, resolution, bleed and file formats.
Tin is printed flat and then formed into shape, so artwork must sit on a dieline that accounts for the tin’s panels, curves and seams. Clean files mean accurate color and a premium result; messy files cause delays at the sampling stage.
Ask your manufacturer for the dieline (keyline) template for your chosen tin. Place your design on the correct panels, keep important elements away from seams and edges, and keep the dieline on its own layer.
Supply artwork in CMYK for full-color images, and specify Pantone (PMS) codes for brand colors that must match exactly. Metal and coatings can shift color slightly, so Pantone references keep your brand consistent. For more, see our tin design tips.
Outline or embed fonts, and supply logos as vector files. If you want embossing, debossing or foil stamping, mark those areas on a separate layer so the factory can build the tooling.
Vector files (AI, PDF, EPS) are best for logos and type; high-resolution TIFF or PSD works for photographic artwork. Always include your dieline and a flattened preview for reference.
At least 300 DPI at final print size to keep images and text crisp.
CMYK for full-color images and Pantone (PMS) for exact brand-color matching; many designs use both.
